Biography
I am an assistant professor at the University of Birmingham. I am with the Socio-Technical Systems group of the School of Computer Science.
My research interests are in the areas of machine learning (ML), generative artificial intelligence (AI), human-centred computing, distributed systems, wireless communications, networks, and information theory.
My current research focus is on reliable and explainable large language models (LLMs), privacy-preserving ML, responsible data economics and valuation for collaborative ML, timely information exchange in distributed systems, and semantics of information.
In my research, I utilize tools and techniques from optimization, machine learning, statistics, applied cryptography, and information and coding theories.
Previously, I was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Southern California (USC), working with Salman Avestimehr. I received my Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, MD, USA in 2021 under the supervision of Sennur Ulukus.
During my doctoral studies, I worked on timely information delivery in large networks, distributed computation and machine learning. Prior to joining UMD, I received my B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University, Turkey in 2016.
I have been fortunate to collaborate with Deniz Gunduz (Imperial College London), Songze Li (Southeast University), Hessam Mahdavifar (Northeastern University), Yupeng Zhang (UIUC), and Alkan Soysal (Virginia Tech) during my doctoral and postdoctoral studies.
My CV can be found here, last updated on October 2024.
